In addition to providing full day toddler and preschool care, The Children’s Workshop Oakland will also begin offering after care for TK-5th grade students in 2026-27, with pick ups from several local elementary schools.
CWO’s after care program for school age children is staffed by nurturing, fully credentialed and CPR/First Aid certified early childhood educators experienced in designing and facilitating emergent, age appropriate, collaborative and individual project-based activities for children ages 4-10 years old.
Our program is structured, hands on and highly scaffolded to support elementary school age student learning and growth in the following ways:
-
-
- Social and Emotional Development: Helping school age children practice effective, age appropriate communication and prosocial peer interaction skills needed to build and sustain meaningful friendships and self-advocate to assert needs, wants, preferences and boundaries with kindness.
-
-
-
- Academic Development: Helping students develop and practice age appropriate study habits and executive function skills (daily homework routine: gathering necessary materials, time management, understanding how to approach homework, identify what needs to be done, ask for help when needed, repack backpack for next school day, etc.).
-
-
-
- Whole Child Development: Providing a relaxed and supportive collaborative learning environment with a wide range of materials and free exploration studio spaces (music, art, design, building, literacy, STEM, etc.) to empower students to explore, discover and further hone their creative, athletic and cognitive interests, abilities and talents!
-
-
-
- High Quality Nutrition, Age Appropriate Free Play & Down Time: The regular school day can feel long and taxing for elementary school age students. CWO after care aims to be a home away from home, where children can refuel with a healthy, protein rich snack, receive guidance and support for developing age appropriate homework routines and enjoy social or individual down time in a beautiful indoor/outdoor setting.
